FAQs

What is a synchronization license?  This is also sometimes referred to as a "synch" license and it allows you to use a recording of a musical work in audio-visual form: for example, as part of a film, video, television program, commercial, CD-ROM or web site. The music is synchronized, or recorded, in timed relation with the audio or visual images. You must obtain such a license from the copyright owner.
What is a performance license? If you have a synchronized production wherein you want a substantial number of persons to experience it either in public or transmitted by any means of any device or process (e.g. broadcast, telephone wire, etc.) such as a film, video, television program, commercial, web site, CD-ROM, concert, convention, etc., you will need a performance license. You must obtain such a license from either the copyright owner or its representative.
What is a mechanical license? A mechanical right, which is granted via a separate mechanical license, allows you to record and distribute (without visual images) a song on a CD or record for private use. You need a mechanical license to lawfully record and distribute records, CDs or tapes. You must obtain such a license from either the copyright owner or its representative.
